The full size J-series and Gladiator are better, but it won't be as fuel efficient ofc.

They are reasonably priced, but not quite as cheap as a Comanche

I had a '96 Cherokee Sport (4" lift, 33" Mud Terrains, locked, SYE, etc) and kick myself for selling it. I've been keeping my eyes open for a clean Comanche, but haven't seen a clean body one in a long time. Make sure you get one with the towing package!

Until GMC turbo'd the Chevy 4.3 in the Syclone, the 4.0 Comanche was the fastest and most powerful compact truck available anywhere. Not to mention most capable. Even the smallest MJ's were rated at 1400 lbs payload. Hands down the best in its class at the time.

I averaged 14.5 mpg out of mine, but that was kicking the crap out of a 300,000 mile truck (could get 19 mpg on the highway if I drove gently). I had it up over 100mph fairly regularly (top speed was ~115 or so) and that eventually did it in. It still runs fairly well with plenty of power, except it knocks like a sumbitch in the bottom end and fills the oil pan with glitter. I was kinda wanting to kill the motor as an excuse to rebuild it into a stroker. Saving up to rebuild the motor as we speak... Speed parts are expensive, speed parts for Jeeps are worse. But if you want a small truck, it's hands down the best you can get on the cheap. I've still used it to rescue stuck vehicles. It really makes me sad seeing it sitting in the yard not moving, and it's a hell of a thrill just to fire it up and drive it for a couple minutes, even with the knocking.

Look out for poorly-installed redneck lifts, rust in the rockers and floorpan (lift the carpets), cracks around the front mount points of the leaf springs... etc. Factory parts for the rear half of the truck can be sometimes worth their weight in gold (used taillight lenses can go for $100 on ebay... per side) and you may find yourself fabricating some things, but just about everything from the doors forward swaps right across with the XJ Cherokee. Also, ComancheClub.com is an exceedingly helpful ressource.
